Simple Beauty poem and garland

Instead of the traditional holly wreath

to hang in the porch,

a novel idea

born from recycling

sparked her imagination.

She gathered old decorations

from dusty attic boxes,

hoarded for years

from fashion trendy trees,

silver, gold, red and ecru

appliquéd, sequined, glittered and frosted,

she placed them on the kitchen table

in order of colour, shape and size.

She would create an adornment

a tradition to expand on

each year.

With lengths of satin ribbon

she folded it into a plait,

a base to weave each trinket

bowed with golden thread.

They jingled as she plied.

A waterfall of thirty-three years

flowed through her memory,

the different countries

tinted traditions,

the children growing up,

reflections in a bauble,

her family circle.

With a red velvet bow

she secured  her garland.

It cascaded the glass panes

tinkled gently in the breeze

beneath a star-lit night.

Christmas memories glowed

on this dark December eve,

a simple beauty

unfolded.
