Blackbird Dawn

Winter skies, full of rain,

the hush of a still daybreak.

Christmas lights and garlands

brighten neighbour’s gardens.

A blackbird tops the maple

a robin in the birch,

rivals for territory

birdsong sprinkles the dawn.

Bare trees stand sentinel,

limbs raised in gladness,

twinkling with raindrops

this soft December day.
